Chances are highly likely that you’re familiar with the work of Greensboro, N.C. upstart Ed E. Ruger, but you just may not have realized it yet. How, you ask? Well, dude’s music has been featured in huge shows like The Boondocks and Breaking Bad—and who hasn’t seen either of those? … Exactly.
Beyond his work on TV, Ruger has been paving his way in the indie-rap scene through super-hype performances and ill original tracks. And we get a dose of both in his new video for “You Ain’t Built Like This,” the tough lead single off his upcoming album Guerilla Grind Pt. 2.
Backed by producer J. Narley’s huge beat, Ruger and his guests destroy the stage and their verses while Phillie Phresh cuts up samples on the hook. Of course, the mic dominance isn’t terribly surprising considering Ruger is joined by the likes of Blind Fury (known for his insane freestyle skills) and Fish Scales (of Southern rap group Nappy Roots).
The visuals are presented by Livewire Ent. and Ruger’s squad (Iconoclast Crew). And just in case you’re in the area, the Iconoclast Crew is presenting the Gate City Cypher event at Shiners in Greensboro thisSaturday, April 30. “You Ain’t Built Like This” will land on Ruger’s latest project, Guerilla Grind Pt. 2: The Token, which should be dropping this summer and features Guilty Simpson and Wax, among others.
If you’re feeling what the NC spitter delivered here, be sure to peep his Bandcamp page to hear his first Guerilla Grindinstallment.
