Comedian Von Decarlo has been on the move these days. Last month, her one woman show, Lasagna at The Pit in Manhattan, was a hit in NYC.
The show was a look into the lens of the role that she plays as an actress and single mom who also balances her personal life dating in NYC.
She also touches on the role that her life time partner—late comedian Patrice O’Neal, a regular on the Opie & Anthony radio show and character on the hit television show, The Office, played in her life.
O’Neal died in 2011 after complications from a stroke. “I’m a better woman because of him and I’m a better mother because of him,” Decarlo told me recently.
Decarlo chatted with RESPECT after her recent show and discussed other things that she’s working on.
RESPECT: What did you think of Saturday’s show?
Von Decarlo: It was only my second time doing the show and it had a very different feel than the debut. There is a lot of interaction and improvisation with the audience in Lasagna. But my experience in improv help me not panic and still work the crowd successfully.
RESPECT: Was it therapeutic?
Von Decarlo: Everything I do is therapeutic. I’m an artist. A writer and performer. But above everything I am a writer first and I always write from a real place. I thank God everyday for my talents because I don’t know how I would stay sane if I couldn’t filter my pain creatively.
RESPECT: What’s next?
Von Decarlo: I have so many different projects I’m working on right now, but my main focus is my one woman show; Lasagna, and giving stand up comedy a serious run in my life. I’ve always done it, but I’ve never fully dedicated my focus to it until now. So in addition to Lasagna, I am also producing and hosting a new after work comedy show with Xilla Valentine called The Happy Hour. We have a great lineup for our debut show, which is Feb 11th at Broadway Comedy Club.
