The Daily Beast’s Ingrid Kesa managed to get tickets to the Kanye West musical. Yes, Mr. West has a musical, but not quite to the extent of a major Broadway spectacle in NY. In honoring his production style and personality that fans have grown to love or hate, University of Sydney student Phil Roser wrote a comedic play titled Kanye: The Musical. Roser played the part of West while his friend and fellow student Damien Higginbotham played the role of Kanye’s late mother, Donda West, designer Marc Jacobs and Spooky Dracula. Not really sure where he’s going with the last character, but it sounded intriguing.
As Roser told The Daily Beast, Kanye centered around “the story of a struggle against the man to become the man. It’s about a guy who took a shot at the throne and didn’t miss.” The two co-wrote the project with a $300 budget that included a script and tickets that ran from $3 to $6. Despite its size, Kanye received a lot of media hype from in-the-know blogger Perez Hilton and Huffington Post, as well as steady audience numbers.
It’s too bad the play’s showtimes were from September 5th to September 7th, and only held exclusively at the university’s Cellar Theater in Australia. But it’s always nice to learn that Kanye fans are embracing him in new and creative outings. Read more details about scenes in the play here.
